The Centre of Art

Around the Passage, between Karl-Marx-Straße and Richardstraße, a number of both well-known and hidden venues offer visitors the chance to discover a number of surprises. Some of the most established cultural institutions in Neukölln are located here, such as the Neukölln Opera, Saalbau Neukölln and the Museum Neukölln, devoted to the history of the district. Nearby, tucked away in courtyards, are studio buildings and other subversive art-locations...

Stardust

A spectacular event occurred in May 2008: The European Fireball Network recorded a collision between two asteroids in the skies above northern Neukölln. This opened a hole in the hemisphere into another energetic realm, inducing the precipitation of cosmic dust over the Schillerquartier. The exact composition of these phosphorescent particles has not yet been analysed; it has been observed, however, that this primordial matter alters the colour of both inanimate objects and living creatures and might have further consequences. For this reason, information from the public, i.e. as to where such material has been seen, is crucial and indispensable. During the festival, volunteer artists will create specially marked shelters that we encourage all members of the public to visit.

Neukölln induces Happiness

Goethe was quoted as saying: "... happiness is the goddess of those who are vital. To fully appreciate this goddess' favour, one has to live and observe other people who savour life to the full." Life in the neighbourhood known as the Richardkiez might not always be filled with joy, but, nonetheless, Goethe's words hit the nail on the head when it comes to describing life here: Neukölln induces happiness! To enable people from further afield an opportunity to share this feeling, a number of artists from this area have decided to dispense some of their joy to visitors to 48 Stunden Neukölln. To do so, a "Route of Happiness" will be marked out for visitors to follow to experience cultural venues in the Richardkiez. Just follow the lucky charms...

The Notion of the Future 10.0

Utopias, dreams, and images of another world are all the stuff of which art is made. The creative artists in the Reuterkiez don't merely dream however; they actively create their own future. For 48 Stunden, they will undertake experiments investigating the nature of happiness and how to make visions of a better world become part of their reality in Neukölln. Everything was definitely not better in the past; the future is bound to bring any number of surprises...

Both reality and utopia can be found. And, best of all, during these 48 hours, one can experience it all without applying for a visa. This is a utopian opportunity...
