BANDS ON BOATS – a documentary about the creative music scene in Berlin
venue: Alte Kindl-Brauerei - zuhause e.V.
Fri 19:00 — 20:30
BANDS ON BOATS, Gabriele Kahnert's documentary-in-progress will be a film about music in Berlin, shot on Super-8. Part of the film captured concerts on a boat on canals in Berlin. Combined with interviews and stories about the bands, this project functions as captivating and amusing portrait of the non-commercial music scene in Berlin.
As has been the case in the last two years during the "48 Stunden Neukölln“, a series of boat trips was organised. On each journey, four very different bands play. Watch the BANDS ON BOATS trailer, parts 1+2 at the "Alte Kindl-Brauerei“ (with english subtitles).

Bureau for Direct Beauty
venue: Berliner Sparkasse
Fri 19:00 — Sun 19:00
The Bureau for Direct Beauty's mission is to photograph people, each under identical conditions, as a portrait, for archival purposes. Viewing portraits together encourages discussions about what's on view. One recognises oneself and others while also being watched all the while. By archiving the procedure, an comprehensive document of our times will be realised.
Having a photograph of oneself that you really like encourages self-confidence, and also becomes a matter of luxury. Does beauty require a degree of luxury? Is beauty a luxury? Can beauty be a by-product of luxury?

Fri 19:00 — 22:00
Sat 14:00 — 22:00
Sun 14:00 — 19:00
Standardised architecture in tight spaces and a complete system as interior décor make “the dream of one's own four walls“, one's “own palaceâ€, a reality. Comfortable private oases co-exist with self-fulfilment in close quarters and what appears to be upscale living for a limited budget is based on profit-orientated bulk commodities that last for ever shorter periods. Production leads to the generation of more rubbish; “prosperity for all†mutates into collective wastage. The artists, Ilka Meyer and Matthias Stuchtey counter this with a vehement declaration that “less is more“, taking up space in a minimalist approach to site-specific installations that deal with these ideas.

At arm und sexy, the dimensions, flexibility, capacity and zeitgeistyness of the term “luxury†will be explored. The installation will feature 1€ knick-knacks purchased on Karl-Marx-Straße, which has traditionally served as Neukölln's high street and is now flanked by a gamut of shops offering cheap goods. Claudia Simon will plate knick-knacks with geniune gold leaf and arrange them around a feature fireplace. Fri 19:00 — 21:00
Sat 15:00 — 21:00
Sun 15:00 — 19:00
Residents draw mental maps of their notion of creative Neukölln. The maps show how different people use and perceive the place where they live. Beverage co-ordination points or an obstacle course through dog turds provide orientation. What one sees in the public realm and from what standpoint these appear as creative spaces depends on how one moves about. This exhibition of some of these inner maps, invites visitors to draw their own.

The Passage is often referred to as the heart of the festival. A broad spectrum of events are held there: performances, exhibitions, music and guided tours. plastique fantastique's installation, RINGdeLUXE, is bound to catch your eye: it hugs the Passage's “waistline“ and façade. The Passage is also where you'll find all the information you need about the entire festival. It is the main meeting point for visitors to the festival as well as where you'll find our popular limousine and rickshaw shuttles.
Skoda-limousines will take visitors from the Neuen Nationalgalerie to Neukölln and back on Saturday from 2 – 9 pm. Taking the Rickshaw shuttle, you can travel up and down Karl-Marx-Straße, seeing the street from an entirely new perspective! (Sa 2 – 10 pm)

venue: Zum Steckenpferd
Fri 19:00 — 22:00
Sat 17:00 — 21:00
Sun 12:00 — 17:00
Neukölln is changing at breakpoint speed: luxury was once defined, for the original population of “plebs“, as the corner pub, but these are now threatened with distinction: debauchery, societal cohesion and interaction now occur elsewhere .Sometimes it seems like people are in retreat. With a variety of feasts for the eyes, ears and taste-buds and a bit of exotic flair, a change of pace is on offer, if only for a little while: just savour life! Join us where a handshake is worth more than a contract, where the spending of a wage packet occurred more often than someone inheriting from a rich aunt, and where walking pancakes can't be bought for cash. Where “live and let live†was always the motto.

Fri 19:00 — 23:00
Sat 13:00 — 21:00
Sun 13:00 — 19:00
Hairdresser Aida Ichkuntana and artist Persefoni Myrtsou are seeking to address questions about the Veil through an artistic cultural dialogue; three photographic images, installed at the window of the hair-salon Aida are showing the black of the head of three women. One can observe the pictures from the outside of the salon.
These ‘Anti-Portraits’ intend to function as an activist act against the negative portrayal of Muslim women. It is intended to deconstruct the stereotypes around the issue ‘Veil’ and its connotations: the veil as symbol of oppression, as a reason for rising islamophobia, as a banal attribute of uneducated, naïve women, as a reason for inequality in the job market.

Fri 19:00 — 23:30
Sat 12:00 — 23:30
Sun 12:00 — 19:00
Peter Müller and Eva AM Winnersbach invite you to the exhibition "Works of Splendour - Between Decadence and Decay" in which they, together with four other artists, will show work at the public toilets on the quay.
The location, with its strong odour, signs of decay, and cloudy, stagnant water will be transformed in unexpected ways through artistic intervention.
Can a place of fleeting privacy become a generous place for public space of pleasure, even debauchery and wastefulness? Can a hint of extravagance, or luxury be felt under an urban bridge?
The artists involved will delve into this year's festival theme, “Luxus Neukölln†by realising a theatrical performance, sculpture and site-specific installations.

venue: Lohmühlenbrücke, Lohmühlensteg und Uferböschungswand
Fri 19:48 — Sun 19:00
Gritta Rösing's photo-installation “strahlender schrott“ (radioactive rubbish) documents the transformation of the detritus of affluent society in abstract, poetic images. Isabel Glathar's ornamental carpet of cultures, entitled “luxus pur“ reflects the basic human need the world over, for jewellery and other luxuries.
Waterways bring the cultures together and are a way of transporting luxury goods. Where the paths meet is also where three different districts come together, where a “luxus universum“ ( luxury universe) can be found.
Friday, 7.48 pm: the audience will set 48 little lamp-powered boats off.
Sunday, 7 pm: anyone interested can take part of the carpet of cultures home!

Luxury also means living in pleasant surroundings. How possible is that if your regular route to the bakery is full of old furniture, paper cups or other things left behind? How can you develop a feeling of living luxuriously?
Dolly the Clown and a pixy named Pumukeline will bicycle through the area with a trailer attached to their vehicle complete with stickers posing the question “Is this beautiful, or could you toss it?“ in German, English, Turkish, Arabic and Russian.
Wherever they see something in the street that appears not to have to do with luxury, they will put stickers on it. Perhaps this will result in things changing...

People as Luxury
venue: Kleingartenanlage Hand in Hand
Sat 17:00 — 17:30
This action illustrates what Neukölln´s real luxury is, namely its people. It shows 12 of its inhabitants.
The image:
12 of Neukölln´s inhabitants sit on folding chairs along a line in a public space in Neukölln for half an hour. They’ll do so 6 times during the festival.
The 12 performers all wear a 6 cm diameter badge on the left side of their chest. Each badge has a different text and together these texts explain the action.
One should read the badges from the left to the right, going along the line of performers. To be able to read the texts well, the public has to approach them really close.

Neukölln has its own sort of brilliance, despite, or even because of its rough side. These rough edges form facets providing the raw diamond with its special sheen when polished. The raw stone has to be split, sawed, rubbed and sanded, and treated in a number of ways to make it into a precious gem. The name diamonds connotes hardness. They are referred to as the kings of gems. They are considered a good investment or a token of love. Neukölln is like a diamond: the area shows its tough side as well as its brilliant facets. Neukölln-based artists will present portraits of 44 individuals and places in Neukölln, veritable Neukölln treasures. Being a Neukölln gem is a sign of true love itself.

Is H!A!S!E! a messenger? A plan? Does it mean something? What precisely does H!A!S!E! want? It is said, that H!A!S!E! Is on the rampage, digging its way under the Rollbergsiedlung, constructing its H!A!S!E-den. A witness reports that, “H!A!S!E appeared. It's there, it's real, but you can't catch it.“ No doubt about it. H!A!S!E! seems to exist.

Fri 20:00 — 04:00
Sat 13:00 — 22:00
Sun 13:00 — 19:00
SPAR*K is presenting a complex ceiling sculpture of 200 fluorescent tubes, which cuts across spatial boundaries, changes continuously and plays with light, color and pattern. The oversized lighting gives the visitor a total opulence of light and color. In the flickering flourescent light, RAMPIG will perform their work SAFT. The troupe from the Haus der Jugend Heidelberg is experimenting material-intensive with the boundaries of physicality and comments on the pervasive media treatment of the body in society. The body as an aesthetic luxury good is at the heart of the play. Humanity is reduced to the body and its fluids: blood and water appear in abundance.

Do we turn green from too much spinach?
Can tomato salad give us courage?
Why do we eat, though we are not hungry?
Do poor people have to eat poor food?
Located within three store rooms, a new EnvironmentInstallation asks questions around food, pleasure and luxury. Three rooms you can walk through, pick food of hanging gardens, dine with others, discuss ideas and finally, write down your thoughts about the experience. Three rooms that invite us to discover them with all our senses, which should serve to look closely into our eating habits, to break them and maybe to create new positions.

Pyramids for Neukolln – The Blue Revolution
venue: Rathaus Vorplatz
Sat 14:00 — 19:00
Sun 14:00 — 19:00
A crowd of bright blue pyramid sculptures will “gather†on the square in front of Town Hall, refusing to leave. They stand together to express their existential demands. Some stamp their feet angrily to make themselves heard. Repeated attempts by the authorities to break up the gathering fail. A couple of pyramid sculptures manage to climb the steps to the entrance and threaten to occupy the building. Come join the pyramids!

luxury taping Neukoelln
venue: Galerie R31 - Hof
Fri 19:00 — 22:00
Sat 15:00 — 22:00
Sun 15:00 — 19:00
Adhesive tape can serve as a dependable indicator for change, improvisation and transition in a city. Through gentrification tape usually disappears from public and semi-public spaces.
The "luxury taping neukoelln" uses parts of the sidewalk (from property border to property border), the entrance into the courtyard and the courtyard itself. The existing cracks will be "repaired" and held together with transparent tape – an absurdly senseless repair, which points out the values of improvisation. Holding something with tape adds value to it for a limited time. After the week-end, the courtyard will be opened for traffic again and the installation disappears by itself shortly after.

TIEFDRUCKGEBIET - a heavy listening experience

TIEFDRUCKGEBIET - a heavy listening experience
venue: Alte Kindl Brauerei, Showcase
Fri 19:30
Duration: 60 Min.
venue: Schillerpromenade, Konzert
Sun 15:00
Duration: 60 Min.
An extreme, physical listening experience, lasting one hour: 12 cars, equipped with subwoofers, drive through the streets of Neukölln, creating a moving wave field of sub-bass frequencies that modulate each other: the TIEFDRUCKGEBIET (low-pressure area). The urban architecture influences these sounds further by reflecting, amplifying, or erasing them. The concert also allows for an encounter of two of Neukölln’s characteristical subcultures, the car tuning and the art scene, and encourages a dialogue about the personal luxury of noise or silence. Check HEAVY-LISTENING.org or twitter.com/HEAVYLISTENING to find out where and when the event kicks off.

In a live lottery game, whose rules the audience keeps on changing throughout the show, our performers fight for a lot of luxury, a little bit of love and almost no life at all. The fairy Ms. Extra fulfills everybodys Neukölln dreams with premium special prizes and wish-fulfillment-vouchers.
Anne Verena Freybott asked people living in Neukölln about what they would do with a 13.8 Million Euros lottery jackpot. The answers made up the text for the gambling-happening, that she developed with her actors.
